5.0 Release Notes

May 13, 2013

We’re pleased to announce Shotgun 5.0 - featuring a brand new set of collaboration tools designed with artists and supervisors in mind, better ways to stay up to date about the things happening around you, the first steps of a cleaner, simpler UI, and much more.

My Tasks
Keep track of what you’re working on and always know where to find the information you need with the My Tasks app. My Tasks displays all the Tasks assigned to you in an easy to scan stack - just click on a Task in your queue to load up the newly refreshed Task’s Detail Page on the right. We’ve also added a lineup of Related Tasks to the My Tasks view - see who is working with you and quickly jump to that Task’s detail page.

For those participating in the Tank Private Beta, we’ve also integrated the Tank app launchers within My Tasks. Now you can log in, select your Task, and get working.

The Inbox is a leap forward for communication and collaboration in Shotgun. The Inbox allows you to see activity on all the things that are important to you and your work based on the things you Follow. From an updated Task due date to a new Version or Publish - a notification is sent to your Inbox for anything you are following to ensure that you’re in the loop on what’s going on with your project. (You can even get a notification pop up if you're using the latest versions of Chrome and Safari.)

In working with Artists and Supervisors, a common request was a way to help the people at the studio reviewing work be more efficient. We've listened and added Screening Room integration directly into the Inbox. Supervisors can follow their teams and get messages about all the new versions they submit. The Inbox also keeps track of read/unread status on Versions, so you’re always up-to-date on what’s left to review.

Global Search
Your trusty Quick Jump bar has been supercharged and evolved into Global Search. Type in what you’re looking for and receive an immediate, curated list of results. Click a result to be taken to its Detail Page or select See All Results to be taken to a full screen Global Search page. On the full screen Global Search result page skim through the results, find the info you need, or follow something you’re interested in with the click of a button.
Never miss a thing by following the things you care about. To follow something, search for it with the new Global Search and click the Follow button. From now on, you’ll receive a notification in your Inbox whenever something happens on something you’re following. Further tune your Following settings via the new Accounts Settings page.

Pick Your Homepage

With the introduction of the Inbox and My Tasks, you may find yourself wishing you can jump right to your favorite view when you log in. Now you can define what you see first by setting your home page. For those of you that have designed a home page that you just can’t give up, you can still use that - just pick "Custom Home”. Can’t make up your mind? Don’t worry, you can always update your pick via your Accounts Settings.

Refreshed UI

We fell in love with the sleeker, more streamlined UI of the Inbox and My Tasks, so we decided to carry that design over to Entity Detail Pages and your Account Settings page. Rest assured - you can still get to all the same important information you’ve always been able to, but now everything is presented in a cleaner, more intuitive manner.

Staged Rollout - Request Your Weekend

5.0 is a major release for Shotgun and - based on your feedback - we’ll be rolling it out to hosted sites over the course of three weekends. Site Admins can contact Support to schedule their site for an upgrade weekend. Any hosted sites not upgraded by June 1st, 2013 will be automatically upgraded that weekend. Learn more about upgrading here.

Other Cool Stuff

We've added searching and collapsible groups to Screening Room's Related Versions pane. Gone are the days of scrolling through an endless list of Versions - find exactly what you need fast.

Upgrade to Ruby 1.9.3 and Phusion Passenger 4 for reduced memory usage, increased performance in Ruby-heavy code and modernization.

Created additional standard database indexes to speed up common queries.

We've updated our recommended browsers and added a new message when accessing Shotgun from an older browser.
